Thornton Oaks Art Committee presents
Reality Brushed: A Collection
of Asian Brush, watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings by Jean Kigel.
The public is invited to the opening reception and artist’s talk on
September 17th from 5:00 to 7:00PM.
Reality Brushed will be on
exhibit from September 17th through October 30th at
Thornton Oaks Monday through Friday from 8:00AM until 4:30PM, unless the gallery
room is hosting special functions.
After the reception it is advisable to call 207.729.8033 to ensure the
gallery/multipurpose space is open to the public.
A specialist in Asian brush painting and watercolors, Kigel draws her
inspiration from many sources: travel and study in China, Japan, and
Latvia, perennial gardening, and the ocean environment of her studio/home.
Kigel’s studio provides a 180 degree view of the ever-changing sky and sea on
Muscongus Bay in Waldoboro.
So it is natural that she paints many Maine boats and seascapes.
However, the perennial gardens that surround her home provide an equally
strong source of inspiration, as do household object and animals.
This show will feature
seascapes,
including the Pemaquid ledges,
a boat with red sails, and
a foggy vista;
animals,
including a sapphire blue lobster, a
baby belted Galloway, and a proud
amber hen; florals,
including a bright bird of paradise, a lavender lotus,
and a delicate pine cone;
and scenes from abroad, including
the Great Wall, a Latvian courtyard, and a grazing horse.
Be prepared for a feast for the eyes and heart.
A member of the Sumi-e Society of America and the Union of Maine Visual Artists,
Kigel has shown twice in Manhattan, and her work is exhibited in various
galleries throughout New England. For
